Antarctica

Antarctica had been on Linda's and my list of to go places for years.  After all, we had both traveled extensively through 6 of the 7 continents on Earth.  The final frontier so to speak. To travel there was to overcome two obstacles.  One was the expense.  Antarctica is not a budget trip by any scope of the imagination.  First you have to arrange transportation to Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world.  Next you need to arrange passage with a small expedition ship, preferably one with about 100 passengers for by international treaty that is the maximum number of people permitted to go ashore.  The second obstacle was that travel to the Southern Hemisphere needs to be done in the summer.  Which for us in the Northern Hemisphere is our winter.   That meant that we would be losing precious ski time.

After a few years of watching the state of the environment deteriorating we decided to commit and book a trip.  A once in a lifetime experience we sprung for an 18 day cruise which would include the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. We chose Silver Seas, an all inclusive luxury expedition cruise company.  Airfare, hotels, meals, drinks, excursions and tips were all part of the price.  All arrangements were taken care of and no hidden fees.  A breath of fresh air from the two previous cruises I had taken.  Our first stop would be Buenos Aires.  There we would meet the rest of our fellow passengers before flying to Ushuaia to board the Silver Explorer.

Below is the Silver Seas video production of our 18 day expedition cruise to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.  It is a wonderful documentary filmed entirely during the cruise that Linda and I experienced on the Silver Explorer.  Our cruise departed Ushuaia, Argentina on December 17, 2019 and returned on January 4, 2020.  Filmed and produced by Ross Vernon McDonald.
