This lonesome elephant seal did not look like he got along well with the others
Elephant seal social hour at the beach. The seal on the left is displaying a “catastrophic” molt. Each year they shed all of their skin and fur at once over a 28 day period. They remain on the beach the entire time, huddling for warmth until they are finally able to return to sea to hunt once again.
A pod of fur seal pups. These were the puppy dogs of the beach; small, active and as cute as can be. This group here is part of a communal nursery. Female fur seals only give birth to one pup each mating season. These pups are all probably related, for the male fur seal battles for the rights to a harem of up to 50 females to mate with.
